Immediate deprecation of the RHMAP Client Binary Build Service (‘Build Farm’)

This is notice of the immediate deprecation of the Red Hat Mobile Application Platform’s (RHMAP) Client Binary Build Service (or ‘Build Farm’).

The RHMAP ‘Build Farm’ is a shared build service which is hosted and managed by Red Hat; this service allows developers using the RHMAP platform to build a Mobile App binary for iOS and Android, supporting both Native and Hybrid (Cordova) build options.

Impact

As we continue to migrate from existing RHMAP based solutions towards OpenShift Cloud Mobile Services (see ‘Mobile Roadmap’ below), we are deprecating support for the existing RHMAP Build Service (‘Build Farm’). This means that building client binaries directly from RHMAP will no longer be supported and the build option will no longer be available in either the RHMAP Studio or via RHMAP command line tool ‘fhc’, based on the timelines provided below.

Mitigation

If you are currently using the build service, we will engage directly to assist in defining an alternative build approach based on your specific requirements. We will provide a document outlining a number of options, and we will also make a Mobile team technical resource available to assist in build related discussion, evaluation and design.

Mobile Roadmap – Cloud Mobile Services

The Red Hat Mobile Roadmap details the evolution of our Mobile offering from the existing mobile ‘platform’ approach (RHMAP) to mobile capability being delivered as a suite of cloud services powered by the OpenShift platform.

These mobile services will deliver a key set of mobile capabilities and extensions which can be used by developers natively on OpenShift to deliver high-value, integrated, enterprise-grade mobile solutions. Please note that the GA date, as well as pricing for these new services, is currently in planning.

Mobile CI/CD

Within the Mobile Services initiative, the ability to manage and automate native and hybrid mobile builds is planned as one of the key value-add mobile services. This service will support containerised builds on OpenShift for Android and allow for the integration of macOS machines as build slaves for iOS builds. The Mobile CI/CD service will be fully integrated into CI/CD pipelines and deployed directly on an Enterprise’s OpenShift cluster and will not be provided as a shared hosted offering as per the existing RHMAP ‘Build Farm’.

Timelines

The RHMAP Build Service feature is scheduled for removal from RHMAP on the 31st December 2018.
